WFP's Engineer Training Academy

Engineers that really want to learn and excel come to WFP.

WFP’s engineering team is trained from Day 1 to be multi-disciplined. The result?

A happy customer who can have their fire alarm, intruder alarm, emergency lights, access control and CCTV serviced on one simple visit. Plus, a happy, multi-talented and challenged engineer where no two days are the same.

That’s why at WFP, we’ve nailed our customer service ambition and our desire to be the best workplace in our field for engineers to work at with just one simple yet consistent promise: to train our engineers like your life literally depends on it – because it does. That’s why we’re winners of the ‘Fire Protection Service of the Year’ accolade at The Prestige Awards 2022.

Looking to join us as an engineer? Whether you’re established in the industry and looking for a new challenge, or just starting out, you can trust you’ll be looked after and trained continuously with WFP.

Meet Barry 'The Legend'...

Barry’s our Technical Director with more than 30 years’ experience in fire, security and electronic engineering.

Problem-solving is like a treasure hunt for Barry. His expertise, which is handed over to our engineers through ongoing mentoring and hands-on training, has saved our customers thousands of pounds by getting to the root of problems, rather than opting for quick fixes which can cost customers time, money, their safety – and, of course, their trust.

Our engineers are trained to be thinkers, investigators and problem-solvers. That’s what makes WFP Essex and London’s highest rated team for commercial fire, security and electrical needs.

Safety is The #1 Priority...

Because of this we don’t offer our engineers commission. When they head to site and spot a problem, they’re not incentivised to embellish or gain from problems our customers need solving.

Their recommendations are based on what’s needed to keep our customers safe and compliant – that’s it!

We’d much rather incentivise our engineers in other ways; including becoming multi-skilled on a number of fire, security and electrical systems with proper training and support, offering a tangible career path with team spirit you can’t find anywhere else, (as well as fair remuneration in the first place!).

For that reason, engineers come to WFP because it’s a vocation, not just a job. They want to be the best in their trade, and have aspirations and ethics that don’t align to simply gaining from deficiencies in safety.

WFP's In-House Training

At WFP, you’ve got access to more than 100 years of fire, security and electrical knowledge when you combine the brains and experience of the team, including: Paul, our Founding Director (pictured on the right); Barry, our Technical Director; Scott, our Contracts Manager; and Ricky, our Electrical Manager.

Engineers undergo a thorough training regime of approximately three months with theory, practical and shadowing training (can be longer or shorter depending on ability and confidence). We only send our engineers out on the road once they (and we) feel ready to.

Engineers then have 1 training day every month (whether they’re junior or senior) to come in and practice on our mock alarm panels within our in-house training room, whilst theory lessons and support on understanding British Standards are pretty much a daily occurrence (not just for engineers, but the whole team!)

One Engineer, Multiple Solutions!

At WFP, we offer more than 30 services (and growing), to design, install, commission, maintain and repair fire, security and electrical systems/products.

Training our engineers to be multi-disciplined means:

  • Engineers learn more, feel challenged and don’t feel stuck in a monotonous role, which can be a hotbed for poor team morale and where mistakes can be made – a happy engineer makes for a happy customer!
  • Fewer visits and less inconvenience (as well as cost!) for customers
  • Streamlines how we operate so we can comfortably expand our customer base and service offerings, to keep more of you safe and legally compliant!
  • Kinder to the planet by not sending multiple engineers to the same site, thereby reducing our carbon footprint (and our customers’!)

Endorsing Women in Engineering

Since training sits at the heart of what we do, and how we can achieve our three core values of Reliability, Honesty and Professionalism, we are a big believer more needs to start at the grassroots level in schools to promote fire, security and electrical engineering (for all genders!).

We’re proud to be endorsers and supporters of any women with a technical aptitude and interest looking to join our industry?
