Are you a dentist or the manager of a dental practice juggling about a million tasks? Has fire safety fallen to the wayside a little?
At WFP, we understand the pressures at hand and are here to help take the weight off a little.
Read on to find out what you need to be doing to keep your dental surgery in tip-top shape to keep your patients and staff safe, and your premises legally compliant.
The Importance of Risk Assessments
As soon as a patient walks into the practice they need to feel safe in that environment.
Plus, there’s also the due diligence you owe to your staff, as outlined in the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
If your surgery lacks the attention to detail when it comes to safety, it doesn’t just leave room for error and harm to the people working in and visiting your practice, but it also impacts your reputation.
We recently heard from a surgery who had a patient complain that the fire door was blocked, so asked us if they could have some help with a risk assessment and some training for staff.
These are often seen as ‘tick boxes’ and low priority jobs that just interrupt the flow of operations, but you’d be surprised just how much time, money and headache it can take by actually doing them to both educate and understand where you’re going wrong.
The first place to start with adhering to fire safety in any commercial premises is to have a Fire Risk Assessment.
This will analyse all aspects of your fire safety to give you a comprehensive report (which you need to have anyway as evidence that you’ve done a risk assessment), outlining areas you’re doing the right thing, areas which need improvement, and areas which are in need of dire attention.
Your report will identify all hazards on the premises, who has the potential to be harmed, the risk of a fire occurring, and how equipped your premises is to either acknowledge or act on a fire occurring.
Specific factors raised in Fire Risk Assessments include the suitability of your fire detection for your premises, which will then outline if you need to add detection to certain areas not already covered to comply with the risks posed within your building.
It’ll also pick up on other equipment within your safety infrastructure, like emergency lighting and fire extinguishers, and you’ll be called upon to present documentation that you get these serviced. That’s why it’s so importance to keep on top of your essential maintenance and keep your reports/certificates in a safe place you can easily refer to.
With Fire Risk Assessments, we don’t just carry them out, we provide unlimited consultations on helping you action any points raised so we take the weight off you rather than handing you a 30-page document you’re left on your own to decipher.
We’ve seen too often people get the report, pop it in a drawer and forget about it. Without looking at your action points and doing something about them, the document is virtually useless as it only demonstrates you’ve been made aware of the problem and did nothing about it.
Our customers, like dentists right now with the shortage of them (leading owners to juggle the role of dentist, office manager, accountant and more), don’t always have the time to sit there and muddle it all through, so we help and take that pressure away by presenting the problem and the solution to you in one hit, rather than just handing you over the issues you’ll then feel on your own about when it comes to solving them.
Choosing The Right Team for Fire Safety Maintenance
There’s a lot of things in life that need to be done that NOBODY enjoys doing.
Anything admin-related feels like a chore – whether it’s sorting out gas and energy suppliers, sorting out your MOT, or for a lot of people, going to the dentist.
Sorry about that.
But the point is, some things need to be done to make sure everything’s healthy, everyone’s safe, and life can carry on as normal.
We’re in the same boat there – because we know that fire, electrical, and security concerns might not always be the first thing on your mind.
But the safety of you, your patients, your staff, and any visitors, is SO important.
We’ve got LOADS of experience dealing with a large group of dental practices, so we know the issues you face…
There’s a shortage of dentists right now, which means you’re taking on more responsibility than you might’ve bargained for.
And that’s why we act quickly.
If there’s ANY issues, then you need to know that they’ll be sorted immediately so you carry on seeing patients and keep your practice moving.
It’s no use being told that someone will be with you a week on Tuesday, or within 72 hours – things need sorting now.
And that’s what we do.
There’s no fuss, no quibbles, and no ‘we’ll do our best’ – we just do.
For almost 20 years, we’ve been building relationships and ensuring that businesses are safe and legally compliant – and we know just how important that is.
Every dental practice has legal obligations, and your fire, security, and electrical monitoring requirements are just a small part of a much bigger picture.

Let’s be realistic, no two businesses are the same – in fact, no two dental practices are the same…
So why would we try to shoehorn a service that doesn’t quite fit into your business?
We wouldn’t. We’ll find out your needs and work out a plan that’s just for you, so your expectations are always met – and exceeded.
We also offer extended warranties, maintenance assistance, and monthly payment plans – we want to take the burden of your fire, electrical, and security requirements off your hands so you never have to worry about it again. Learn more about your benefits here.
